The Topic

The world is facing twin crises of rising authoritarianism and declining respect for human rights and rule of law even in established democracies. Russia's invasion of an independent and democratizing Ukraine brings this crisis to a new level of urgency for fellow democracies to take action. But can they rise to the occasion when their own societies are in social and political turmoil over such issues as vaccinations, disinformation, and identity politics?

About Ted Piccone

Ted Piccone is the Chief Engagement Officer at the World Justice Project, where he leads WJP’s efforts to advance the rule of law through strategic partnerships and convenings, policy advocacy, and locally-led initiatives around the world. Mr. Piccone has more than 30 years' experience in international relations, policy, and law, most recently as a Senior Fellow specializing in international order and strategy and Latin America at the Brookings Institution. He holds honor degrees from Columbia University’s Law School and the University of Pennsylvania and has taught international human rights law at American University’s Washington College of Law. He is an expert in comparative politics and global trends in democracy, human rights and the rule of law, and will address these topics from both a historical and foreign policy perspective.
