The world is facing twin crises of rising authoritarianism and declining respect for human rights and rule of law even in established democracies. Russia's invasion of an independent and democratizing Ukraine brings this crisis to a new level of urgency for fellow democracies to take action. But can they rise to the occasion when their own societies are in social and political turmoil over such issues as vaccinations, disinformation, and identity politics?
